In conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Hainan Association in Pangkor Island, 85 Dasein Academy illustration students and lecturers were invited to paint the murals as part of the Association arts infusion initiatives and cultural continuity in Pangkor Island.
Led by Dasein principal Mr. Gooi Hean Chai and Illustration senior lecturer Zac Lee, Dasein students transformed dull cement walls into whimsical and imaginative murals by painting colorful marine life and local delicacies such as Laksa, Nasi Kandar, Rojak, Satay and etc. And the staircase featured two large phoenix and 58 more on the sidewalls were stunningly painted. All the murals took three days to complete.
This community-driven project was also part of the 4D3N practical studies of Dasein Illustration Department; an initiative which aims to provide a cultural and art enriching practical learning experience for students to develop further not just artistic skills, but to better understand how artists can make a difference and considerable contributions to the well-being of the community.
